Why Is It Always the Last Place You Look?
Have y'all ever noticed that whenever you can't find something, the very first thing somebody says is...
"Well... it'll be in the last place you look."
Well...
I sure hope so.
Because once I find it, I'm not gonna keep looking just to prove a point. 🤣
That saying has never made a lick of sense to me.
Matter of fact, there are a lot of things people say that are supposed to be helpful...
But really aren't.
Like...
"Have you looked where you last had it?"
Well...
If I knew where I last had it...
This whole search party would've been canceled.
Or my personal favorite...
"It's probably right in front of you."
Listen.
If it was right in front of me, we'd both be doing something a whole lot more productive right now.
Finding something you've lost always starts out the same.
You're calm.
"I know I just had it."
Then about five minutes pass.
"Hmm..."
Ten minutes later...
"Okay... this is getting ridiculous."
Twenty minutes later, you've questioned your memory, accused innocent family members, and checked places that make absolutely no sense.
The refrigerator.
The bathroom.
The pantry.
Your purse.
The freezer.
Why the freezer?
I don't know.
Desperation makes people do strange things.
Then somebody else walks in.
Looks around for approximately four seconds.
Picks it up.
"Oh... here it is."
Excuse me?
I've been looking for that thing for the last twenty-three zillion minutes!
Where was it?
"Right where you left it."
Well, thank you, Detective.
That narrows it down to literally anywhere.
And why is it that the minute I decide to put something somewhere "safe"...
I have basically guaranteed I'll never see it again.
"I'm putting this somewhere so I'll remember where it is."
No.
No, I'm not.
I'm creating a scavenger hunt for Future Me.
Poor Future Me.
She has to deal with all my "great" decisions.
Bless her heart.
I've actually found things months later and thought,
"Well... look what I bought myself!"
No, Jenny.
You didn't buy yourself anything.
You just forgot where you hid it.
And let's talk about car keys.
They're either exactly where they're supposed to be...
Or they've entered another dimension.
There is no middle ground.
The TV remote?
Same story.
How does one tiny remote disappear inside a couch with three cushions?
I swear couches have secret compartments.
I also love when somebody asks,
"Did you check your pockets?"
No.
I skipped the one place I use every single day and decided to start with the junk drawer instead.
Thanks, though. 🤣
Then there are sunglasses.
I cannot tell you how many times I've looked everywhere for my sunglasses...
Only to realize they're sitting on top of my head.
Or my phone.
I've literally used the flashlight on my phone while looking for...
My phone.
How?
I don't know.
I'd explain it if I could.
The older I get, the more convinced I am that my brain has about forty-seven tabs open at all times...
And somewhere, one of them is playing music, but I can't figure out which one.
The worst part is when you finally give up.
You stop looking.
You sit down.
And there it is.
Just sitting there.
Looking at you.
Like it wasn't the one hiding the whole time.
I swear our stuff waits until we're frustrated enough before it reveals itself.
Just for entertainment.
I'm convinced my keys, my phone, and the TV remote all have secret meetings while I'm asleep.
They're plotting.
They have to be.
Because there's no other explanation.
So tell me...
What's the weirdest place you've ever found something you were looking for?
Please make me feel better.
Because if one more person tells me,
"It's always in the last place you look,"
I'm gonna start hiding their stuff just so they can experience the joy for themselves. 🤣
